How has a failure, or apparent failure, set you up for later success?
I used to think failure was this big, scary monster, something to avoid at all costs. A big red ‘F’ stamped on your forehead. But somewhere along this messy, amazing thing called life, I figured out something crucial: failure isn’t the end; it’s often the jumpstart.
Let me tell you about that time I bombed an important job interview. I studied. I practiced. I power-posed in the bathroom mirror. Then I proceeded to blank out on the simplest questions. It was mortifying.

In those first few weeks of stinging embarrassment, I was ready to crawl under a rock. But here’s the thing: I also got stubborn. That failure sparked a fire in me. I wasn’t going to let that moment define me.
I analyzed what went wrong. I reached out to my network for honest feedback. I took classes, found a mentor, and kept practicing. The next time an opportunity came along, I was ready. I didn’t just get the job; I excelled in it – and that led to other exciting possibilities.

That was my turning point, the moment I learned these lessons:
- Failure forces you to grow: It stings, but it also pushes you out of your comfort zone. You gain perspective, you figure out where your weaknesses are, and you come back stronger.
- Resilience is a muscle: Every time you bounce back, you build a little more of that mental toughness. That’s priceless in every area of life.
- It’s okay to pivot: Sometimes, failure is a sign you’re on the wrong path. It stings to change direction, but it can lead to even greater things than you originally imagined.
I’m not going to pretend I love failing. But I’ve learned to respect the lessons it holds. Now, instead of fearing it, I see it as a stepping stone. Because chances are, my next stumble will be the very thing that propels me toward my next win.
